How to Choose a CPA in Philadelphia
Start with the work you actually need, not the biggest name you’ve heard of on Market Street. A simple W-2 return with city Wage Tax withholding is a different engagement than an S-corp that also files BIRT and NPT, or a 501(c)(3) that needs an audit.
Ask whether the firm regularly files Philadelphia Tax Center returns. A CPA who only handles federal and PA-40 work will miss city registrations, estimated payments, and the credit that can offset part of NPT against BIRT net income tax.
Finding a CPA can be difficult. It takes time to research and understand whether that person will be able to meet your needs. That’s why I built a free concierge form that you can submit and I will find you the perfect match.
Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the difference between a CPA and an accountant?
A CPA is someone who has undergone extensive training, typically earning a bachelor’s or master’s degree in accounting, passing a rigorous four-part exam, and gaining sufficient experience providing tax or accounting services. An accountant may not be a CPA. If you want the highest quality tax, accounting, or other financial services, it’s best to work with a CPA.
How much does a CPA typically cost in Philadelphia?
Expect around $150-$350/hr at smaller Philadelphia firms and $250-$400/hr at larger Center City practices. Flat fees are more common for compliance work.
A straightforward individual return (federal, Pennsylvania, and city Wage/Earnings Tax) often runs $250-$500. Self-employed returns with Schedule C usually land between $600 and $1,200. S-corp, partnership, or multi-entity packages that include BIRT and NPT commonly cost $1,500-$3,500, and more if several states are involved.
Bookkeeping is typically priced separately, often $400-$3,000 a month depending on transaction volume.
Do Philadelphia residents and businesses need more than a federal and Pennsylvania return?
Usually yes. Employees who live or work in the city deal with Wage Tax (or Earnings Tax if nothing is withheld). Most for profit activity in Philadelphia also requires BIRT, and non-corporate businesses generally file NPT as well. Some residents owe School Income Tax on unearned income. A local CPA should tell you which of those apply before April 15, not after a city notice arrives.
Should I hire a Center City firm or a neighborhood CPA?
Hire for the problem. Use a larger Market Street or Broad Street firm when you need an audit, review, compilation, multi-state work, or nonprofit compliance. Use a neighborhood practice when you want tax prep, bookkeeping, payroll, and someone who already files Philadelphia city returns for shops like yours. Many of the best fit firms on this list sit outside Center City and still cover the whole metro area.
